The Hagia Sophia currently standing is a third construction, done in a different architectural style, despite occupying the same location as its predecessors. The first Hagia Sophia was built by the most prominent architects of that time period (527-565), Anthemios and Isidoros, under order from Emperor Justinianos. It has been mentioned in texts that during its construction, there were 100 architects each working for these two men who supervised them and oversaw their work; these groups of 100 also had smaller groups: 50 builders for each architect with 5 layers of supervisors themselves overseeing the other group.
Construction of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey began on February 23, 532. The building was completed within five years and ten months. It opened to divine service with a grand ceremony on December 27, 537.
The Hagia Sophia was used as a church for 916 years until it was converted into a mosque following the conquest of Istanbul by Fatih Sultan Mehmed. It served as a mosque for 482 years afterward. In 1935, Hagia Sophia was designated a museum under the direction of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the decision of the Council of Ministers. With the current government, it has been converted into a mosque again in 2020.
