Pamukkale is an interesting natural wonder located in the inland of Aegean region. It is famous with travertines which is the result of calcium carbonite gathered in the same slope of mountain for thousand of years. It gives fantastic views with its natural look as they look like cotton fields. Pamukkale means “cottoncastle” in Turkish and it was always a spa and healing center.
It is known that people visited this place for curing going back to Roman times. This is how the ancient city of Hierapolis developed next to the hot springs. It quickly became one of the most significant ancient city in the region thanks to controlling trading routes and later it became the center of textile production in ancient Anatolia. Modern city of Denizli not far from Pamukkale and Hierapolis is stil one of the most significant textile center in Turkey.
Ancient city hosting one of the biggest necropolis in between the ancient cities. Colonnaded Street stil reflects the glory days of the ancient city with the main state and public buildings scattered on both side of it. Ancient roman theater in the city is one of the best preserved sample in Turkey and have been rebuilt by Italian archaeologists succesfully. City is believed the death place of St Philip one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ.
