Ephesus is the most atractive ancient city in the western part of Anatolia, Turkey. It was a religious, political and economical center for several centuries in ancient times. City’s location had to be changed due to silting so there are more than one Ephesus in same area. The most glory one is the III. Ephesus as it is called and founded by Lysimachos, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. This hellenistic city was declared as the capital of Asia minor by Romans and had its peak years under Roman rule, decorated by Roman buildings. Ephesus is one of the best preserved classical cities of the ancient world, and probably the best place in the world to get a feeling for what life was like in Roman times. There are so mere markable buildings like Celsus Library which is rebuilt in 7 years, Terrace Houses will give you full idea about the wealthy Roman houses and the theater which St Paul preached or the main street where Cleopatra and Marcus Antonius were welcomed.

Ancient city has been excavated by Austiran archaeoligists for more than 125 years.  They had work with an international team and have digged, restored and rebuilt in the ancient city except two world wars.

The city of Ephesus was also a significant pilgrimage center and city’s importance was related with the shrine of the mothergoddess. The deity was named as Artemis during Hellenization in I. Millenium B.C and a massive temple was built in the honor of the goddess which was these cond marble built temple in history after Hera temple in Samos island. This temple was later declared one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The city is also significant for Christian history. St Paul lived in Ephesus and visited several times. It is also believed that St John and Mother Mary spent their last years in Ephesus area. Mary’s House still visited by millions of people today as pilgrimage place. St John Basilica is one of the most important Byzantine heritage in Anatolia where the apostle was also burried in.
