Whirling Dervishes Ceremony

Whirling Dervishes Ceremony
The Whirling Dervishes are a group of Sufi devotees who seek to attain a closer connection with God through a form of meditation that involves spinning around in circles. Sufism is often considered the mystical side of Islam, emphasizing a personal and direct experience of the divine. In the past, Sufism was studied as a spiritual movement that reached its peak during the medieval period, with the production of renowned literary works in Arabic and Persian that became classics of the Sufi tradition.
In recognition of the Whirling Dervishes Ritual’s cultural significance, UNESCO declared it an INTANGIBLE WORLD HERITAGE in the category of traditional performing arts and social practices in 2005.
The Whirling Dervishes Ceremonies are conducted at Saruhan, a 13th-century Caravanserai in Cappadocia. Caravanserais served as waystations for travelers and their animals to rest safely for many centuries. They facilitated trade, communication, and human movement throughout Asia, North Africa, and Southeastern Europe via an extensive network of trade routes that spanned these regions.
