The UNESCO World Heritage Convention was established in 1972, and Turkey became a member on March 16, 1983, paving the way for its historical sites to be added to the prestigious list. Currently, Turkey has 19 World Heritage Sites, comprising 17 cultural properties and two mixed properties that feature both cultural and natural elements. In addition to these 19 sites, Turkey has 84 places on its Tentative List of UNESCO, indicating their potential to be nominated for World Heritage status in the future.
